Exploring the world

As keynote speaker and adventurer I get to explore the world. Wherever I go, I try to immerse myself in the culture and experience the numerous marvels each destination has to offer. No matter the location – there is always something novel, intriguing and extraordinary to discover.

I find that humans are often blind to the beauty that surrounds them and unaware of the adventure that awaits just outside the front door. I am deeply grateful for each opportunity to ‘see’, feel, hear, taste, smell – to meet new people, sample new cuisine, climb a new mountain and share my journey with a new audience.

The first few dozen times I tried to ride a bike were rather painful disasters. And yet, from the moment of my first success I knew that – from that point onward – I would never let anyone tell me what was possible.

I’ve embraced the challenges put before me, not only to prove that the impossible is possible, but also to challenge myself to learn new skills and nurture my own resilience.

From ultra marathons and yacht races, to climbing mountains and setting landspeed records; I relish each opportunity to test the limits of my own abilities. Whether white water rafting, water skiing, diving, cycling, climbing, swimming, hunting (culling), kayaking, jumping or driving.

Inspiring others

Becoming a motivational speaker wasn’t always on the cards for me. While it’s become my greatest passion, I fell into it quite incidentally. The more I traveled the world and the more people I engaged with, the more I realised that others find encouragement through my own journey.

There is a type of camaraderie that’s fostered almost spontaneously in engaging with others who have overcome hardships. My message, “turning huge obstacles into opportunities”, resonates with most anyone. Everyone from those living in abject poverty to corporate executives face personal hurdles which seem impossible to cross. I share my message because it inspires others to think beyond the limitations of their own circumstance, and believe that the impossible is possible.

It’s quite impossible to be in my position and not advocate for the visually impaired as well as others living with disabilities. My aim is not merely to create meaningful and practical pathways to accessibility for those who are differently abled, but to immerse those without disability in the lived realities of the disabled. We can’t foster understanding without building bridges.

I guess you can say I’ve come full circle. I founded the Hein Wagner Academy – an institution focused on training for the visually impaired that caters for both functional skills, as well as accredited local and international courses in Worcester, the very place where I started my own schooling at the age of five. Our ‘Dinner in the Dark’ initiative offers diners a high-end culinary experience that immerses them into a ‘blind dining’ experience.

Crossing the generational divide

Building bridges is not just about ability, but about learning to reach younger generations.

Conserving natural resources

Louis Armstrong’s song, ‘What a Wonderful World’ may not have the same impact on those who can see that it does on the blind. While we cannot see the world as you do, we are equally mesmerised and enthralled with nature and the beauty that surrounds us.

While I cannot see the devastation humans have caused throughout our natural habitats, I experience it in other ways. The smell of burning rubber, of decay, environments which used to be tolerable suddenly vacillating between extreme hot and cold, terrain which used to be easier to cross suddenly riddled with new streams, or dried up entirely.

This plight may not be on all corporate agendas, and yet all of us will need to face up to the future we leave our children, and generations to come.
