The Hein Wagner Academy 2026 Fundraiser

25 October 2026 Hein Wagner and cycling partner Alwyn de Kock will set off from Robert Sobukwe Town (previously Graaff-Reinet) for a gruelling 7-day trek over gravel, tar and sand, through gorges, across mountains, facing scorching Karoo sun and piercing winds.
Why? To raise funds for the Hein Wagner Academy for the blind and visually impaired.

The Hein Wagner Academy is a first-in-the-world tertiary institution catering exclusively to the blind and visually impaired. It offers internationally accredited cyber security training, national management qualifications, as well as retaining and upskilling courses. Their holistic approach to education means students are encouraged to develop skills outside their academic studies - through social engagement, sport, culture and life skills which empower them to become financially and physically independent.
The full-service campus offers advanced accessibility and assistive technologies in learning spaces, recreational areas as well as dorms. In order to maintain this progressive and accessible environment, they have acquired a quotation for a new communal campus kitchen to offer students the freedom to prepare their own meals, and drinks. While the Academy does offer catered meals, the campus kitchen does not offer 24/7 catering. The communal residential kitchen will allow students not only to take charge of their own dietary choices, but also provide the opportunity to acquire essential culinary and cooking skills. Given their Dinner in the Dark initiatives, a smart kitchen geared towards the visually impaired is an invaluable asset for the Academy and its students alike.
