How far can you cycle without sight?
On 25 October 2026 Hein Wagner will face one of his toughest challenges yet - cycling 750 km with a 8 500 m elevation variance over 7 days... and he is cycling blind.
Although Hein was born blind, he's never allowed his disability to hold him back. As a blind ultra-athlete and international keynote speaker, he champions the plight of the blind and visually impaired while simultaneously using his story to spark motivation and meaning in the lives and hearts of people of all abilities, races, cultures, nationalities, faiths, ages, genders and languages.

Why a blindfolded biking challenge?
The blindfolded mountain bike challenge is both aimed at highlighting the challenges faced by the visually impaired, and to showcase the skill required to cycle without sight.
In the run-up to the Nedbank Gravel Burn where I will take on 750 km from Karoo to Coast, I would like to create some hype and excitement for the race.
While I'm excited to complete the challenge, my participation will serve as a platform to raise funds for the Hein Wagner Academy. Read more about the Gravel Burn Race.
About the Hein Wagner Academy
The Hein Wagner Academy, located in Worcester, South Africa, specialises in tertiary training for the visually impaired. Founded in 2019, the Academy offers specialised cyber security training, accredited management courses and a range of retraining and upskilling courses.
The campus accommodates students who commute daily, as well as long-term students who reside on campus.
The fully-accessible residential facilities remove barriers to inclusivity and allow students to focus on their studies and social activities in a safe, convenient and comfortable environment.
